Estonia

Misconception No. 5—
The Food’s No Good

Estonians like their food very salty, which can catch outsiders by surprise.

Food in Estonia is based on peasant life. Given the climate, that means lots of root vegetables (especially potatoes), meat, fish, and grease. All the things you need to eat before putting on your felt boots and going to feed the pigs in temperatures of minus 30. Estonians also like their food very salty, which can catch outsiders by surprise. But things are changing. Tallinn now offers plenty of choice in restaurants, and some adventurous chefs are giving traditional recipes a new twist. Drinking has become an even greater pleasure. Estonian beer is cheap and comes in varieties to suit all tastes. Wine lists in restaurants are extensive—and wine is much cheaper than in neighboring countries.
