Misconception No. 7—
It’s Sexless

Tallinn’s old town has lost most of its sleazy nightclubs and saunas.

Sex, in both the political and the commercial sense, is a big deal in Estonia. Tallinn’s old town has lost most of its sleazy nightclubs and saunas, but there are still plenty around. Sexual morals among more respectable folk have changed a lot since the Soviet era, when women who were still unmarried at 21 were made to feel like old maids. Estonia is increasingly adopting Nordic social attitudes and values—but there is still a long way to go. Men are definitely less likely to help with the cooking, cleaning and shopping than in, say, Sweden. But it is already light years away from the habits across the border in Russia.
