Estonia

Misconception No. 8—
It’s Provincial

There is a long tradition of looking to the outside world.

Estonia was for decades the only bit of the Soviet Union where you could watch Western television. And it was the most socially and culturally advanced of the places annexed by Stalin. So there is a long tradition of looking to the outside world for everything from technology to culture. Educated Estonians love globalization for the opportunities it brings them, both at work and at home. For the poor and less educated, it is a different story, where you may find people whose mindsets are truly stuck either in the Soviet Union or—among the very old—in pre-war Estonia. That can lead to a narrow-minded, rigid approach which can be very frustrating to the outsider, even more to a modern-minded Estonian who wishes the country could escape its miserable history more quickly.
