European energy solidarity principle: new initiative

Gas covers around a quarter of the EU's energy demand and the block’s present annual gas demand is about 400 billion cubic meters (bcm). It is predicted to remain relatively stable in the coming years. However, around 65% of the EU's gas is imported: main suppliers are Russia, Norway and Algeria.
