A great hotel in what is set to become a great part of town, Conti has taken the cream and red approach to room design and applied it to everything, from the small budget spaces in the roof to the breathtaking luxury suites. Popular with visiting business professionals and stag weekenders alike, the proof of the pudding is in the service, which at Conti is a heck of a lot better than many hotels of this type in the city. Doubles 125 .
Crowne Plaza Vilnius: (C-3) M.K. Čiurlionio 84, tel. 274-3400, fax 274-3411;
hotel@cpvilnius.com. One of the countrys few 5-star hotels, this large gray elephant of an 80s-built
Intourist beast has had an almost complete capitalist makeover and is now run by the prime ministers wife no less. The rooms and other facilities are all what youd expect for a hotel like this, but grumbles have been liberally mixed in with the plaudits about the service. Moaning aside, the advantages are there if you look hard enough, including the hotels early entry into the Wifi revolution and the view from the rooftop bar. Doubles 66-139 .

Le Meridien Villon Vilnius: Highway A2, Vilnius-Riga, tel. 273-9700, fax 273-9730. This roadside resort hotel is so quiet and peaceful it almost has the feel of a religious retreat. Set some 20 minutes out of the city, the
Villon has no space constraints and stretches out amid rolling hills, pine and birch trees. It looks oddly out of place in no-mans land next to one of the main trans-Baltic highways, but if you have a car or dont mind taking shuttles, the Villon is highly recommended. This foreign-owned hotel has all the creature comforts, including an outstanding restaurant, a nightclub, and a terrific health club. They recently opened the biggest convention center in the Baltics. Doubles 120 .

A green, glass-sided hydraulic lift whisks you up five floors from the cellar restaurant through the glass-topped courtyard to the comfortable, modern rooms with cheerful use of color, bright green banisters, blue tables and reddish wood furnishings. The thin, motelesque aqua-blue carpets are a bit off, but with big beds and restored frescoes in some rooms, you cant quibble. Lithuanias declaration of independence was made here in 1918. Doubles 195 .
Novotel Vilnius: (C-4) Gedimino 16, tel. 262-9999, fax 266-6201;

A fine location and by all accounts a delightful place to flop. In Vilnius ever-increasing Star Wars campaign, the new Ramada has upped the ante with the addition of DVDs throughout, and bunging a fine Italian restaurant at ground level. Very tasty indeed.

This hotel, tucked into a side street, has miraculously risen to become a centrally-located gem. Some of the rooms can be smallish and the corridors narrow, but the cheap singles in the roof area are good value at 85 . The owners have ensured polite staff, artsy paintings on every floor, and a lovely restaurant below. The location is close to the parliament.

Mikotel: (D-5) Pylimo 63, tel. 260-9626, fax 260-9627; reservation@mikotel.lt.
This hotel is tucked into a fairly unruly looking street near the train station. But it belies its surroundings: its recently been renovated, and is modern, clean and has friendly service. The best thing is that its both cheapish (just 40 for a single) and located in Old Town. A good budget option.
Rinno: (D-4) Vingrių 25, tel. 262-2828, fax 262-5929; info@rinno.lt;

A good value hotel slightly out of the center but featuring enough quality and pleasant add-ons to make up for the location. The rooms are clean and the windows have been thoughtfully soundproofed to keep the noise of what is a very busy road outside to a minimum. Doubles 65 .
Adelita: Rodūnios 8, tel. 232-9304, fax 213-6463. Presented with no other choices, stranded travelers might well prefer to sleep at the airport than at this airport hotel. Though its a Lithuanian-American venture, Adelita seriously lags. Doubles 45 .
Skrydis: Rodūnios 8, tel. 232-9099, fax 268-5967; hotel@vno.lt.
This state-owned airport hotel shares space with the less-than-impressive
Adelita, but is actually a bit better. They have fully-renovated rooms for about 20 .

Europolis: (D-4) Švitrigailos 11d, tel. 215-0410, fax 215-0411,
hotel@europolis.lt. Fantastic value if you dont mind spartan furnishings, awkward locations and a safari to find the place, this slightly claustrophobic hotel is pandering to the upmarket Polish backpacker set and clearly winning. Extremely good value if you take a triple, find the official entrance at the back of the building, or, if its open, sneak in through the cafeteria of the same name around the front. Doubles 45 .
JNN hostel: (A-3) Konstitucijos 25, tel./fax 272-2270; jnn@lvjc.lt.
Super clean rooms start at 20 for a single and all are equipped with shower and toilet. For some, the best value in town.
Panorama: (D-4) Sodų 14, tel. 273-8011, fax 213-3881; reservation@hotelpanorama.lt.
For the budget traveler arriving by train or bus in the middle of the night, Panorama will do. Just. The top floors have been renovated, which is nice, but the ladies on reception havent. Its still a bit of a Soviet timewarp in here, so expect to get shouted at if you lose your key. Renovated rooms 40 .
Paradisė: Ukmergės 246, tel./fax 279-4279; motelparadise@one.lt.
This quintessential Lithuanian business traveler-geared metallic box offers 12 modern rooms whose prices reflect their size rather than what youll find in them. Way out of the center on the road to Riga dont expect fabulous vistas or English-speaking receptionists, but do be prepared for a pleasant bar, sauna, swimming pool and a hot shower before dropping into one of their ample beds before hitting the road the next day. Not everybodys cup of tea, a website is promised but no one in the building it seems has the faintest idea as to what the address will be. Doubles 30 .

Užupio: (D-6) Paupio 31a, tel. 264-3113, fax 264-3112; info@uzupio.lt.
A bit of a slog up a miserable road and quite frankly a bit of a pig to find, but well worth the effort if you can be bothered. One of the few hotels in Vilnius bohemian district, this large house set back off the road offers a choice of rooms from doss-style backpackers delight to your own little basic apartments. Doubles 35 .
Elektros Tinklų Svečių Namai: (D-4) Šv. Stepono 11, tel./fax 216-0321. Just south of Old Town. Bottom-of-the-barrel accommodation for the adventurous, and a great location close to sights and the train station. Granted, the front door opens onto a bombed-out building thats become the neighborhood dump, but what did you expect? This is about as good as it gets for a measly 10 .
Filaretai: (C-6) Filaretų 17, tel. 215-4627, fax 212-0149. In Užupis, east of Old Town. Vilnius own long-lasting IHY youth hostel, stocked with friendly staff and dorm-like rooms packed with two to eight beds. Some call this neighborhood artsy; others call it dangerous. Beds cost about 12 .
Jaunujų Turistų Centras: (C-6) Polocko 7, tel. 261-3576, fax 262-7742. At 7 per person this is without doubt the cheapest in town and its clean and friendly. Found in the crumbling but very cool and arty Užupis district, this place is a must for students and others watching their cash. You can even use the kitchen.
Old Town Hostel: (D-5) Aušros Vartų 20-15, tel. 262-5357; vilnius@balticbackpackers.com.
Warm and welcoming, almost like a B&B, an IHY-affiliated hostel. Eight beds in a room, but at less than 10 a bunk good value all the same.
